HEIMO ZOBERNIG
Curated and commissioned by Yilmaz Dziewio
Austrian Pavilion, 56th Venice Bienniale (2015), Giardini Biennale, Venice
Exhibition Design, Art Production, Technical Coordination
Heimo Zobernig’s project directly relates to the existing Austrian Pavilion, designed by Josef Hoffmann and Robert Kramreiter built in 1934.
M+B Studio developed the technical project based on Heimo Zobernigs artistic project.
The challenge was balancing the essential forms of the installation with the original building and the apparent absence of contents, between sculpture and architecture.
The internal part of the pavilion was covered by a site-specific floating structure, painted in black. M+B Studio was in charge of the production, carried out in Venice, the logistics and authorization procedures.
“Zobernig removes the building’s historicizing architectural elements from sight by means of a black monolith that seems to hover under the ceiling casting its shade on the entire floor space of the pavilion, and a black floor construction that eliminates the pavilion’s different levels. At the same time, Zobernig’s complex intervention relativizes the bounds between architectural space and nature, inside and outside. His architectural intervention, whose isometric plans recall Mies van der Rohe’s Nationalgalerie in Berlin, together with the garden and rear wall of the courtyard, constitutes an enclosed site where one can linger and reflect on art’s modes of presentation and on human presence in space […].”
